India
We have a small centre in East Delhi where we have established a programme
of classes in English. As English is the medium in which most business and
professional dialogue takes place in India, these classes help people to
gain skills and confidence to improve their capacity to work. We also see
the classes as an important medium for facilitating conversation with disadvantaged
groups, encouraging co-operative, non-violent attitudes in education, and
building relations between groups who do not otherwise talk with one another.
We work with a number of groups of people, both in our centre and in various
“outreach” settings. These groups include members of the Local
Hindu, Sikh and Muslim communities as well as Ambedkarite Buddhists, who
are from the dalit community and Chakmas (tribal people in North East India
who are indigenous Buddhists). Out reach work includes work with groups
in Buddhist viharas, and work with very poor potter children living on the
streets. We also assist children in Tamil Nadu. . For further information
