Hawaii
Through an association between Amida Trust and New Moon Foundation, a centre for Pureland Buddhist practice was established on the northern part of the Big Island of Hawaii in the summer of 2006. We expect life at the Amida Hamlet to be close to the earth, centred on Pureland practice, hospitable to visitors, socially constructive, and integrated with the larger Amida world of centres round the planet. The climate permits outdoor life most of the year round. The Amida Hamlet is located at the northern tip of the island on the Kohala coast between these extremes and so benefits from a climate that is balanced and moderate. Here we are creating a place of peace, mindfulness, celebration and practice. We believe that Amida Buddha wants to take us to his Pure Land and that that is our true home. Here in this world our work is to replicate our true home from whatever is at hand. Here in Hawaii, therefore, we hope to help restore a little bit of this tropical paradise to its former natural splendour and to live in harmony with the spirits of the land, sky and sea, all of which are portals to the infinite light of Amida.
